Something New - Away Games

The Chargers' first away journey took them down to Basingstoke in the luxury of a coach whilst watching Mystery Alaska to get the team up for Hockey on Sunday 8th January for the rematch with Basingstoke Hyenas.

Upon arrival it was clear to see that the Hyenas had a full squad to face the visitors and were keen for a home win. Unfortunately the Chargers were down two players for the game (Russell only being able to join the squad at the start of the 2nd period). The EIHA also had a problem with available refs, we therefore had a 15 year old linesman being thrown in at the deep end and refereeing the game - which he did very well for his age and experience.

The 1st Period started well and the Chargers were keen for a good results, but the game was destined to be a hard physical game. The Hyenas started the scoring at 1.26, the Chargers put another line out to try and pick things up, the scoreboard was quiet until 12.11 when the hyenas scored a goal, whilst Jenny lay to the side of the net after a hard check. But the Chargers kept the pace up and were soon try to put the pressure on the Hyenas net. As the hits got harder players began to get aggetated and Steve Hughes received a 2 mins for a Body Check, giving the Hyenas a pwoerplay which they made use of and scored the 3rd of the night.

The 2nd period opened with the Chargers up 1 player with the arrival of Russ Rickett who had driven from Guildford for the game so Red Bull and Mr Mal were charged with there team mate on the ice. Unfortunately the Hyenas seem to be full of power tonight and opened the 2nd period scoring at 25.09, followed by another at 28.19. Alex decided to change with Speedy at 29.27.

While Speedy was warming up the Hyenas took advantage and scored at 30.33, quickly followed by another at 31.22. The Chargers didn’t give up and the determination to get at least 1 goal was always present, lines were altered slightly at the back to see if the defence could be strengthen which began to work well. Mike and Russell gave a positive team talk during the 2nd break and the Chargers went out in the 3rd to just play hockey, and humour Mike. Unfortunately for the Chargers Jeff Taylor had to drop out due to an injury which left Mike to re work the lines to allow for 2 short.

With the Big ice having a effect on the Chargers, by the 3rd period legs were tiring and the physical force from Basingstoke was taking its toll. Russ, Paul, Mike, Andy and Goetz went out to try and score on a powerplay but the Hyenas goalie still held off and killed the penalty. Back the full strength the Hyenas powered 2 more goals in 2 mins to take the score to 9-0 by 47.26. For the last 13 minutes of the game both teams kept the pressure up and played good, clean hockey.

The game ended with a couple of late penalites one each side but both teams and all players enjoyed the game - lets look to the rematch next season.
