Win Credited To Line 1 And Goaltending


The Hyenas made the trip to Chelmsford for the 1st of 2 games booked, they had a ligher than usual squad and the Chargers 3 lines looked stronger against the Hyenas 2.

It wasn’t long before the Chargers opened the scoring with Russ Rickett tallying at 0.38 with assists from Paul 'Redbull' Revill and Andy Malyon. Two minutes later the 2nd line out for the night sent a Shot flying pass the Hyenas goalie to give Julien Ashley his 1st goal with assisted by Steve Hughes.

The action quietened for a while until the Hyenas hit back with 2 goals in 2 minutes to tie the game 2-2. Then at 15.44 the Chargers defense allowed B Allen to breakaway and score a one on one goal to take the lead 3-2 into the 2nd. After a quick team talk the Chargers were fired up for the 2nd and wanted the win. But the goal didn’t come until 29.19 again from Russ Rickett, assisted by Andy Malyon and Paul Revill. It was a high tension game and both teams began picking up penalties along the way. The Chargers and Hyenas both kept the pressure on as the minutes counted down in the 2nd till it end 3-3.

Both bench's were trying to work out plays to get the winning goals and keep the win. Russ and Mike both spoke to the Chargers to keep the moral high to get the players to step the pace up for the 3rd and final period.

Basingstoke were 1st to start the scoring off in the 3rd with a goal coming from M Givogue to give the hyenas the lead again. But with the game getting heated as both teams were out for the win. The most physically part of the game began with both teams fighting to gain control of the puck. It wasn’t long before Paul Revill broke through the Hyenas defence to tie the game 4 -4 with assists going to both linemates.

With less than 10 minutes left in the game the Chargers were going all out to get that much needed winning goal. With quick line changes and set plays being explained, at 56.40 it all came together as Russ Rickett got his first ever hat trick bringing the score to 5-4.

The Chargers' defense quickly tightened, as the last 90 seconds proved to be the hardest. The Hyenas came out firing, trying to get the goal to tie it again. Alex Bradshaw made several key saves to thwart the Hyenas offense. The game ended 5-4, and after a hard fought battle, the Chargers emerge victorious.
