Charity Match Sparked off Team !

The Chelmsford Chargers originated in May 1991 when, after a half- joking comment of "how about us lot playing you lot " a charity match was arranged between mechanics at the Essex Police Garage and BMW Sawbridgeworth Motorcycles.

At this time hardly anyone could skate properly let alone use a stick, writes Tom Hair. However, the match was great fun and in excess of £ 1000 was raised for Broomfield hospital's kidney unit appeal backed by the Essex Chronicle. (Article) The team continued to practice regularly until early 1992 when things got a bit more serious. Everyone brought full kit and the team was coached by a variety of people, particularly Ken Boomsma and Chris Reed.

The standard was now rising and many of the orginal faces were replaced with newcomers. The players ages ranged from 18 to 43 and there was an even wider range of skating ability. After a series of matches the team realised there was still an awful lot to learn about this game called Ice Hockey, but they managed to win against the Under 16'S Tomahawks in July 1992. After having a number of coaches over the years including Jo Abbs, the team is now being coached by Mike Ford with Russell Rickett as Assistant coach.

The team now in its 13th playing season they have more young players coming through and the standard is still improving. But the Chargers motto is still to have fun and enjoy the game we all support, but to also win occasionally.

The team line up for 1992/1993 :

Colin Adams, Stuart Rochester, Kevin Robin, Tom Hair, Ian Muir, Steve Carpenter, Chris Lett, Martin Parfitt, Tony Crabb, Nigel Howard, Andrew Malyon, Geoff Wilkins, Chris Skippen, Jo Abbs, Graham Reed, Andy Davies, Mark Sampson, Jenny Malyon (nee martin), Mike Ford.
