Basic Hockey Guidline
Defensive Zone
Your main job is to defend - do not think about attacking until you have total control of the puck - this applies to ALL FIVE PLAYERS.
Do not puck watch !!! Keep your head up and watch the opponent. If he tries to pass you, separate him from the puck and ride him out. From Under 14 level upwards you should look to body-check for two reasons: 1 - he can not get the puck if you have checked him and - 2 - he can not get a return pass if he has passed prior to being checked.
At all times there must be one defending player in the slot. Do not worry about the opponent behind the goal until he moves into a position where he poses a threat on goal. One defenseman must always be in front of the goal. He should be facing up-ice regardless where the puck is in order to be able to see as much of the opposition as possible. If the puck is in the corner he should turn his head frequently but not his body.
If you are under pressure from an opponent inside your defensive zone, dump the puck over the blue line and try to use the boards to do this.
Never pass the puck rink-wide across your zone or through the centre at your own end
If you are under extreme pressure in your own defensive zone try to freeze the puck against the boards with your skates or stick or, alternatively, ICE THE PUCK.
Make sure that you have someone to pass the puck to. Never pass in your own zone without looking first. Only then pass to a man who is in the clear.
Never shoot the puck around the boards unless one of your teammates is there or the opposing defenseman is not in position.
Never allow your team to be outnumbered in your own defensive zone. Make sure that everybody back-checks!!
Neutral Zone
Never go offside!
If all your teammates are covered by opponents, delay, skate back to re-group and attack again
Never try to stickhandle when you can pass to a clear player. Create room by skating into free ice, ready to receive a pass.
Offensive Zone
One man should always drive for the net to create pressure.
You must WANT to score. Shoot early and look to drive towards the net to pick up on rebounds.
Do not make too many passes. This wastes time and allows the opponents to skate back and re-group.
Always have your stick on the ice ready to receive a pass and shoot at goal in one movement if necessary.
Defenseman must shoot the puck quickly from the point or, if they are under pressure, shoot the puck into the zone around the boards. If you allow your opponent to strip you of the puck you are in deep trouble as he will be able to move up ice faster than you because you are now out of position.
