The diagram above shows you the two areas from which the best chances of scoring a goal are achieved.

If you are a forward you should attempt to get into this area to shoot or, if you can not do this, try to pass the puck to one of your team mates who can get there.

If you are a defender it is important that you control the slot and do not allow an opponent any freedom to play or control the puck.

At no time should you put too many of your own players into this area as it will become impossible for your netminder to see the puck.

Remember: Each player is responsible for marking one of the opponents!

There are some basic rules in hockey which apply to the game in general. These 'rules' are fundamentals that cover all levels of hockey from under 10's right up to NHL. I do not expect you to memorise these rules but recommend that you should read them often to remind yourself of what you should or could be doing when you are on the ice.

I am breaking up the various options into zones and situations as follows:

Defensive Zone; Neutral Zone; Attacking Zone; Power Play and Penalty Killing.
